Teaching and Research Area
As a Pharmacologist and Pharmacist nearing completion of a PhD in Pharmacology, my teaching interests focus on delivering student-centred, inclusive, and evidence-based education in pharmacology and toxicology for undergraduate pharmacy students. I am passionate about integrating real-world research into teaching, fostering critical thinking and scientific inquiry through active learning and laboratory-based instruction. I have experience in curriculum delivery, assessment design, and academic mentoring for undergraduate pharmacy students. My research centres on the pharmacological evaluation of natural products for the management of type 2 diabetes and its complications, with particular focus on their insulinotropic, cytoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. I specialise in the use of in vitro models, including INS-1 832/13 cells and pancreatic islets, alongside bioassay-guided fractionation and phytochemical characterisation. My ongoing work explores the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying β-cell protection and insulin release, with the broader aim of developing affordable, plant-based therapeutics for managing chronic metabolic diseases.

Research Interest

  • Pancreatic β-cell protection and regeneration – Studying the mechanisms by which plant extracts modulate insulin secretion, oxidative stress, and calcium signalling in β-cells.
  • Natural product-based drug discovery – Exploring bioactive compounds from herbal sources for their metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects.
  • Pharmacological evaluation of medicinal plants – Investigating the therapeutic potential of ethnobotanicals, particularly for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
  • Health innovation for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) – Developing accessible, affordable treatments using natural compounds for managing chronic metabolic disorders in resource-limited settings.
